Creatinine measurement in a 24 hour urine is used as a renal function test and is useful in the evaluation of skeletal muscle disease, muscular dystrophy and Polymyositis; 24 hour urine creatinines are also increased in primary myopathy. Values correlate well with total body muscle mass in persons with normal renal function, food intake, and a diet of constant composition. Excretion declines with age and is increased in acute infection, injury, severe emotional stress, rigorous exercise, and diets high in protein, creatine, and creatinine.
Please specify on the request form if the sample is a 24-hour urine,
timed urine (not 24-hour), or random. If sample is a 24-hour or
timed urine, please indicate the total urine volume and the time of
collection on the request form.
