Centromere antibodies are recognized as a serological marker of a form of systemic sclerosis or scleroderma that is commonly referred to as CREST syndrome (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal immotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia). Patients with centromere antibodies tend to have a more benign form of scleroderma with less systemic involvement and these patients tend to produce no other antinuclear antibodies including SCL-70.
