Assess humoral immunity. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant immunoglobulin of extravascular liquids (65%) and of serum (70-75%). Antibodies of the IgG class are produced in response to most bacteria and viruses. IgG consists of two heavy and two light chains and contains less than 3% carbohydrate. IgG has four subclsses: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4. Both IgG1 and IgG3 bind firmly to the Fc receptors of phagocytic cells, activate killer monocytes (K cells), and cross the placenta.
