Very high concentrations of antibodies to the EBV early antigen (EA-R) are detectable in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and titers increase with progression of disease from stage I to stage IV. High titers of EA IgA antibodies are useful in combination with VCA-IgA antibodies to detect nasopharyngeal carcinoma in high risk populations from Asian, African and Mediterranean regions.
