Hepatitis B surface antigen is the earliest indicator of the presence of acute infection. Also indicative of chronic infection.

Certain reactive HBSAg results are confirmed by neutralization and can
require up to 2 mL of additional specimen. Sample requirement must be
met to prevent a QNS (Quantity Not Sufficient) result.
