Panel qualitatively identifies presence of both HBeAg and HBeAb and quantitates Hepatitis B Virus DNA down to 20 IU/mL (116 copies/mL). The disappearance of both HBeAg and HBV DNA coupled with a positive HBeAb is indicative of a decline in viral replication. Persistent HBV DNA viral load and HBeAg are associated with the development of chronic disease. Individual components are are also available. HBeAg indicates active HBV replication. Infectivity is evaluated based on HBeAg and HBsAg. When HBeAg persists much longer than 10 weeks, the patient is likely to develop chronic hepatitis and be a carrier. See Hepatitis in the Infectious Disease chapter, Interpretive Information section. HBeAb appears in the early convalescence of HBV infection. With carrier state and chronic hepatitis, HBeAb may not develop.
