Screening for fetal anomalies, primarily neural tube defects. May predict other adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Collect specimen between 14-22 weeks gestation. Icteric or
Grossly lipemic specimens are not acceptable.
Split serum into two tubes and ship on cold pack. If not shipped
immediately, samples should be frozen.

Notes
Reject criteria: Grossly lipemic Results which are less than 2.5 multiples of the median (MoM) are considered to be normal when evaluating fetuses for neural tube defects (NTD). Normal serum AFP values exclude 95% of cases of anencephaly and around 80% of cases of spina bifida. Closed dysraphic states and small defects may yield normal results. Unexplained elevations of MSAFP have been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as premature rupture of the membranes, fetal demise, abruptio placenta, pregnancy - induced hypertension, preterm labor and neonatal death. However, the effectiveness of monitoring or intervention based upon such information is not known. Maternal serum AFP tests are not diagnostic and AFP alone has limited application for screening purposes. This panel should only be used to screen for Neural Tube Defects. AFP Quad Screen (test code #3092) is preferred when screening for fetal anomalies.
