Uptake tests are used to estimate the number of unoccupied (unsaturated) thyroid hormone binding sites on serum proteins. Values are directly proportional to the free hormone fraction. In hyperthyroidism, more binding sites and in hypothroidism, fewer binding sites are occupied by T4 on TBG (thyroid binding globulin). TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and free T4 are generally recommended for assessment of thyroid function.
