Microsporidia infection was first recognized as a cause of chronic diarrhea in patients infected with HIV. Microsporidia may also cause pneumonia, acute bilateral keratoconjunctivitis, and infection of the biliary and pancreatic ducts.

1. Stool and duodenal aspirates fixed in 10% formalin or Total-Fix(R)

2. Urine sediments, CSF, BAL/Nasal secretions; preferred in sterile
container, acceptable on microscope slide, methanol (or 10% formalin).

3. Conjunctival/corneal scrapings, preferred on microscope slide,
methanol (or 10% formalin).

Ship preserved specimens at room temperature (preferred).
