Microsporidia infection was first recognized as a cause of chronic diarrhea in patients infected with HIV. Microsporidia may also cause pneumonia, acute bilateral keratoconjunctivitis, and infection of the biliary and pancreatic ducts.

Preferred Specimen: 5 mL or 5g (2 mL or 2g minimum) Stool in
10% formalin.
Instructions: Sterile screw-cap container with 10% formalin.
1. Stool and Duodenal aspirates fixed in 10% formalin or
total FIX(R) Transport vial.
2. Urine sediments, CSF, BAL, Nasal secretions: Preferred in sterile
container, acceptable on microscope slide 10% formalin fixed.
4. Conjunctival/corneal scrapings, preferred on microscope slide,
methanol (or 10% formalin) fixed.

Ship preserved specimens at room temperature (preferred).
