Organisms producing ESBLs may be clinically resistant to therapy with penicillins, cephalosporins, or aztreonam, despite apparent in vitro susceptibility to some of these agents if only routine susceptibility testing is performed.

Stability of isolates will be determined by the laboratory. Organism
must be viable. Test is only applicable to Escherichia coli,
Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Proteus mirabilis
isolates.

Specimen Requirements: Pure isolate on an agar slant in a double
walled container

Specimen Stability: Frozen Unacceptable
