Cryptosporidium parvum is an intracellular parasite that causes severe and chronic diarrhea in patients who are immunocompromised.

The specimen must be passed into a clean dry container and
must not be contaminated with urine. Add stool to the 10% formalin
or Total-Fix(R) vial to bring the liquid level to the "fill to here"
line on the vial. Mix the contents throughly until homogenous.

The patient must not use barium products, antacids, antidiarrheal
medications, or laxatives containing oil prior to collection of
a specimen for parasitological exam.
