Fungi can infect the cerebral spinal fluid, other body fluids, and tissues. These infections occur more commonly among patients who are immunocompromised. Early diagnosis and effective treatment can reduce the likelihood of severe sequalae.

Specimen requirement: Primary specimen from any source in sterile,
leak-proof container. Tissues or brushes in transport medium or
in a small amount of sterile saline are acceptable. If KOH is
requested second swab must be submitted. Skin/hair/nails, refer
to 4605(X) or 39515(X).
