Fungal infections are most common among hospitalized patients, specifically with indwelling catheters, or who are immunocompromised. Blood culture is a method to detect invasive fungal infections.

BACTEC (TM) Myco/F Lytic aerobic blood bottle is the only
acceptable container type.

Reject criteria: Specimens in EDTA (lavender-top) tube; specimens in heparin (green-top) tube; specimens in citrate, ACD, or SPS (yellow-top) tube; BACTEC (TM) plus aerobic/f (silver label w/ gray-top); BACTEC (TM) lytic/10 anaerobic/f (purple label & cap); BACTEC (TM) peds bottle. Methodology: Continuous Monitoring Blood Culture System Additional Information: If culture is positive, identification will be performed at an additional charge for each organism (CPT code (s): 87106 or 87107. In the event of an initial identification of Coccidioides, Histoplasma, or Blastomyces, the following additional identification methods will be performed at an additional charge: Coccidioides DNA Probe (CPT code 87149); HistoplasmaDNA Probe (CPT code: 87149); Blastomyces DNA Probe (CPT code: 87149). If an additional identification method is required, ITS nucleic acid sequencing may be added at an additional charge (CPT code: 87153). Susceptibilities will be added upon request.
