Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of the solution to the density of water and is determined by measuring the refractive index of the solution using a refractometer. Specific gravity is used in conjunction with measurement of the creatinine concentration in the specimen to help assess the validity of a urine specimen being tested for the presence of drugs.
