The mean urinary citrate excretion rate in patients with idiopathic calcium urolithiasis is significantly lower than that of control groups. Hypocitraturia is common in patients with urolithiasis resulting from renal tubular acidosis and in patients with enteric hyperoxaluria. Cirtate excretion is low in renal insufficiency.

Do not include first morning specimen; collect all subsequent
voidings. The last sample collected should be the first morning
specimen voided the following morning at the same time as the
previous morning's first voiding. Specify 24-hour total volume
on container and test requisition.
