Thrombocytopenia that is refractory to platelet transfusions may be due to direct platelet antibody. Testing is useful to differentiate immune from nonimmune disorders.

Do not refrigerate or freeze.
If the platelet count is less than 20,000/ccm, submit 7-10 mL of
whole blood.

Platelet Count Minimum Volume
>=45,000 2 mL
20,000-45,000 5 mL
<20,000 10 mL

Pediatric minimum volume: The minimum volume is platelet count
dependent. If possible, submit at least 1 mL EDTA blood.
