The culture isolates and identifies significant pathogens responsible for respiratory related infections.

1. Source of specimen is required, please include on requisition.
2. Acceptable specimens (lower respiratory): Sputum, bronchial
washing, tracheal aspirates, etc.
3. Unacceptable specimens: Frozen, dry swabs, multiple specimens in
24 hours.
4. Ship specimen at ambient temperature within 24 hours of collection.

CPT Codes: 87205; 87070. 1. Gram stain will be performed on all specimens to determine acceptability. Rejection criterion is the presence of greater than 25 epithelial cells per 100x field. In this case, gram stain will be reported and culture will be canceled. 2. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing on significant pathogens will be performed at an additional charge. 3. For other organisms, order the following: N. gonorrhoeae Culture: Test code #2414 Bordetella Culture: Test code #2416 Legionella Culture: Test code #2404 Mycoplasma pneumoniae Culture: Test code #2406 Group A Streptococcus: Test code #5772.
