The culture isolates and identifies significant pathogens (e.g., Gardnerella, budding yeast, group B Streptococcus, and N. gonorrhoeae) responsible for genital related infections. CDC guideline: Recommendation of universal prenatal culture-based screening for vaginal and rectal Group B Streptococcus colonization of all pregnant women at 35-37 week's gestation.

1. Source of specimen is required. Specify the exact site where the
specimen was obtained.
2. Avoid collecting specimens from sites with large number of
commensal (normal flora).
3. Acceptable specimens: Vaginal, urethral, cervical, vulva, penis,
etc.
4. Unacceptable specimens: Refrigerated and frozen specimens, dry
swabs.
5. Ship specimen at ambient temperature within 24 hours of collection.
