Detects presence of Herpes simplex virus DNA down to 80 copies/mL, to aid in the diagnosis of herpes simplex infection. Sensitivity is superior to viral culture (requiring 10 to the fifth power virions/mL). Highly specific and readily differentiates serotypes I & II. Replaces brain biopsy as gold standard in HSE diagnosis.

Do not freeze whole blood specimens. Cytologic specimens should be
collected according to the instructions provided with the ThinPrep(R)
or SurePath(TM) kits for cervical samples. Swab of vesicle fluid or
scrapings should be sent in M4 transport media/swab. Tissue should be
submitted frozen shipped in sterile container. Ship with 24 hours of
collection by overnight courier.
