A galectin-3 test may be ordered for the identification of individuals with chronic heart failure at elevated risk of disease progression.

Serum:
1. Gently invert 5X (DO NOT SHAKE!).
2. Let blood clot for 30 min. at room temperature.
3. Centrifuge at 1300 rcf for 10 min.
4. Store and transport refrigerated.

Plasma:
1. Gently invert 8-10X (DO NOT SHAKE!).
2. Centrifuge immediately at 1300 rcf for 10 min.
3. Aliquot top layer from lavender top draw tube and place PLASMA into
transport tube and dispose of draw tube. Label the transport tube as
EDTA plasma. ONLY ship plasma in transport tube.
4. Store and transport refrigerated.
