HDL Cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) is comprised of different subtypes. HDL2 is a risk factor cardiovascular disease even in patients whose Total and LD cholesterol are within the desirable limits established by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).

If a cholesterol measurement is to be performed along with other
lipid tests, the patient should fast 9-12 hours prior to collection.
Fasting for at least 12 hours is required.
