The deletion of 9p21 (CDKN2A/p16) is present in both early and late stages of the primary melanoma. Studies suggest that 9p21 deletion might be a highly informative marker in common and dysplastic nevi with high risk of malignant transformation (Casorzo, et al. Melanoma Res. 2005; 15:155-160).
